xMag Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 31, 2026

Important safety notice. xMag is an earthquake monitoring and analysis app that interprets public earthquake catalog data. It is not an official earthquake alert system, earthquake prediction service, safety advice, or emergency service. For emergency instructions and official warnings, follow your local and national authorities.

Overview

xMag is designed to work without creating an account. The app shows live earthquake data, maps, location-based context, saved locations, saved earthquakes, optional push notifications, premium features, and advertising for non-premium users.

Most personal app data, such as saved earthquakes, saved locations, filters, map preferences, and premium entitlement status, is stored locally on your device. Some data is sent to Apple, Google, or the xMag notification service when those features are used, as described below.

Information you provide or enable

Push notifications

xMag uses Apple Push Notification service (APNs) and an xMag notification backend hosted on Cloudflare Workers to deliver optional earthquake notifications.

When notifications are enabled, the app may send the notification backend your APNs device token, generated device identifier, app version, build number, locale, notification preferences, magnitude thresholds, quiet hours, time zone offset, and, if near-me alerts are enabled, latitude and longitude used for matching nearby earthquake events.

This information is used to register your device, apply your notification preferences, send earthquake notifications, avoid duplicate delivery, troubleshoot delivery errors, and disable inactive tokens. You can disable notifications in the app or in iOS Settings. Push notifications are informational catalog alerts, not a government early-warning system.

Location data

xMag uses location only when you grant permission or choose location-based features. The app may use location locally to calculate distance from earthquakes, show nearby events, estimate whether an event may be relevant to your location, and calculate approximate distance to mapped fault data.

If near-me push notifications are enabled, latitude and longitude may be sent to the xMag notification backend so it can match earthquake events against your selected radius and magnitude settings. If near-me notifications are disabled, location is not needed for that notification matching.

Advertising

xMag uses Google AdMob to show app-open ads to non-premium users when they return to the app (subject to in-app rules such as a premium subscription or an initial ad-free period after first install).

Non-personalized ads. xMag requests non-personalized ads from Google. These are contextual ads that are not based on your interests or your activity across other companies’ apps and websites. xMag does not use your saved earthquakes, saved locations, or notification settings for third-party ad targeting.

No App Tracking Transparency (ATT) for ads. xMag does not show Apple’s App Tracking Transparency prompt and does not use the advertising identifier (IDFA) for personalized advertising or cross-app tracking on your device.

Consent in the EEA, UK, and similar regions. Where required by law (for example in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom), Google’s User Messaging Platform (UMP) may display a consent message before ads are shown. Your choices are handled through Google’s consent tools as configured for this app in AdMob. You may be able to change privacy options later when the app or Google presents a privacy settings entry point.

Google and its partners may still process limited technical information—such as device type, language, IP-derived coarse location, ad interactions, diagnostic data, and consent status—to deliver, cap the frequency of, and measure non-personalized ads, and for fraud prevention, as described in Google’s policies. Aggregated ad measurement technologies (such as SKAdNetwork) may be used without building a cross-app interest profile for personalized advertising by xMag.

Premium users may see fewer or no ads depending on the current premium feature set.

Purchases

xMag uses Apple’s StoreKit system for in-app purchases. Payment processing is handled by Apple. xMag does not receive your full payment card details. The app may store local premium entitlement status so premium features can be unlocked after purchase or restore.

Terms for the app are provided through Apple’s standard licensed application end user license agreement unless a custom license is separately published: Apple Standard EULA.

Earthquake data and third-party sources

xMag reads public earthquake and map-related data from third-party sources such as USGS, EMSC, GEM, and local bundled datasets used for city, fault, map, or earthquake context. These sources provide earthquake catalog or reference data. xMag does not control the privacy practices, availability, or accuracy of those third-party data providers.

Information we do not require

xMag does not require you to create an account. We do not ask for your name, email address, phone number, contacts, photos, camera access, microphone access, health data, or financial account details.

Data retention and deletion

Data stored locally by xMag remains on your device unless you delete it in the app where available, reset related settings, or uninstall the app. Uninstalling the app generally removes locally stored app data from the device.

Notification backend records may remain for as long as needed to provide notifications, maintain delivery logs, troubleshoot delivery errors, and prevent duplicate delivery. Disabling notifications or deleting the app prevents future notification registration updates from the app. Apple purchase records are managed by Apple according to Apple’s policies.

Your choices

Children’s privacy

xMag is a general earthquake monitoring and information app. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy when xMag changes or when legal, platform, technical, or App Store requirements change. The updated version will be posted on this page with a new “Last updated” date.
